Acceptable Time For 5K Marathon

created on 08/20/2010 09:35 am

I've been running a 5K every other day. Been doing it at a pace around 40 minutes.

I was just wondering what is an acceptable time and how others are doing.

Hi Kham,
It depends very much on the area you're doing it... i.e. hills etc. I tend to average around 25 minutes. If you've not been running long then I'd just try and cut it down by maybe a minute or 2 a week. It does take time though. Set a reasonable target each time. I damaged my knee last year from pushing myself too much (on distance rather than time), so just make sure you take sensible steps.

I have started running in 5K's this year. My last race was around 33 minutes. I don't run every day or even sometimes for weeks in a row. When you run in races you cut alot of time off. When I run at home it takes almost 40 mins to run the 5k. So I think you are doing great.

Thanks for the responses,

Nicholas, I also have a bad knee, so I do end up walking some of it.

Melissa, you are right, I think I would cut more time if I am in a race rather than running myself.

Watch that knee Kham. Your time looks pretty good. If you push it it'll only end in long term damage. Really wish I hadn't risked mine. Hind sight's a wonderful thing!! Just listen to your body... it's good to push yourself but at the same time do it sensibly. Like I say increase it speed wise, but my first step was to try and run it all... even if that speed is slower than running and walking. Then once comfortable with that, increasing slowly but surely. Easy to monitor on a treadmill but you can do it fairly easily by comparing times as you go past landmarks on your route.

I ran my first half marathon this year in May. It felt great to finish. (that was on my bucket list) I wa snot as prepared as I should have been. Hurt my heel in Feb. got a little lazy on my running .... ok alot lazy. think I ran about 8 time from Feb. to May 7th. The 500 mini marathon had to be completed in 4 hrs. I ran it in 2:48:37 which was way faster than I planned. By mile 8 or 9 my knee did not like me. So now that I am doing better on my running schedule (not were I need for a fall half marathon)now when I run 3 miles my knee lets me know.. so take it easy. When are u running in a 5K?

Melissa,

I am planning on running the 5K sometime in the spring of next year. 5/3 Bank has it every year, its on my bucket list, so I want to complete that.

in general you might want to refer to the 10% rule. Don't increase speed or distance by more than 10%. I have been running for the past year and am down to 18 minute 5k's but I think that may be on the low end...
